Cleveland is an outdoor wall lantern from Elstead Lighting's own range. Its clear seeded glass shade – glass with fine air bubbles – has a rounded, slightly bellied shape and sits on an upward-curving arm, topped by a roof with a turned finial. The cast aluminium body is finished in weathered bronze: dark, with copper-toned highlights along the edges.
How big it is and where it fits
The lantern is 54.3 cm tall, 24.3 cm wide and projects 30.2 cm from the wall. It is the medium size in the Cleveland family; beside a front door it is worth comparing those 54 cm with the height of the door frame and the space above the handle. It weighs 2.46 kg.
The back plate is flat, so the lantern mounts on a flat wall. Where there is none beside the door, the manufacturer offers a separately sold corner bracket – C-BKT2-BROWN or C-BKT2-BLACK. It is a Class I fitting, so the circuit needs a protective earth conductor.
What conditions it is built for
An IP44 rating means protection against splashing water from any direction: the lantern can hang on a facade in the rain without any canopy over it. The manufacturer specifies it for exterior use, and aluminium does not rust the way steel does.
What light it gives
Inside there is one E27 lampholder for a bulb of up to 60 W. No bulb is included – for this lantern the manufacturer recommends a clear Edison-style LED lamp, sold separately, whose filament shows through the glass. At around 3000 K the light at the entrance is warm rather than a cold white.
The seeded glass softens the light slightly but stays transparent, so the bulb remains visible. The fitting is compatible with dimmable lamps where the circuit has a dimmer. The manufacturer describes the design as classical with clean lines and intends the lantern for house facades as well as hotels and restaurants. The Cleveland family also includes small versions, post lights and chain lanterns in the same finish.
