The small Cleveland is a wall lantern whose shade hangs from a curved arm fixed to a decorative wall plate. The body is cast aluminium in a Weathered Bronze finish – a patinated bronze with lighter wear on the edges – and the rounded shade is clear glass with small air bubbles. It belongs to the own range of the British company Elstead Lighting.
Size and mounting by the door
The lantern is 41.5 cm tall and 18.5 cm wide, and it projects 23.8 cm from the wall. That last figure is worth comparing with the space by your door – roughly that much room is taken above a passage or beside the frame. It weighs 1.33 kg.
For mounting on an external corner of a building, the manufacturer offers a separate corner bracket in two colours: C-BKT2-BROWN and C-BKT2-BLACK. It is not included, but it lets you hang the lantern where the entrance has no flat stretch of wall.
Light and outdoor conditions
The lantern has one E27 lampholder for a bulb of up to 60 W. No bulb is included. The glass is clear, so the bulb stays visible – a decorative bulb with a visible filament and a colour temperature of about 2700–3000 K gives a warm light that suits this design. The fitting works with dimmable bulbs if the circuit has a dimmer.
The IP44 rating means protection against water splashing from any direction, which is why the manufacturer approves the lantern for outdoor use on a facade. It is a Class I fitting, so the protective earth must be connected. Elstead gives a 3-year guarantee on it.
Style and the Cleveland range
The classic lantern shape – a small dome with a finial, a scrolled arm with ornament and a beaded edge on the wall plate – suits the facades of traditional houses as well as hotel and restaurant entrances. The Cleveland range also includes a medium wall lantern, a chain lantern, pillar and pedestal lanterns and lamp posts in the same finish, so the entrance, the path and the driveway can be lit in one style.
