Elle flush ceiling light - 2 light sources - Chrome Elstead

Elle is a flush ceiling light by Hinkley, distributed by Elstead Lighting. A low, round steel body finished in chrome is wrapped in a band of clear chevron-cut glass, and an etched glass disc with a chrome centre closes the fitting underneath, so the bulbs stay hidden from every angle.

Size and installation

The light measures 30.5 cm across and just 12.5 cm high. It sits directly against the ceiling with no drop, so it suits rooms where a pendant would hang in the line of sight or eat into the ceiling height. It weighs 4.85 kg — noticeably more than a lightweight plastic ceiling light, which matters when choosing the fixing in the ceiling.

Elle is protection class I, which means it must be connected to the protective earth: an earth conductor has to be available at the ceiling box.

Bulbs and light

Inside are two E27 lampholders, each rated for a bulb of up to 60 W. Bulbs are not included, so you choose the brightness and light colour yourself — for a bedroom a warm 2700–3000 K is the usual choice. As a matching accessory the manufacturer names the clear, dimmable Litec E27 A60 LED bulb, sold separately.

The fitting works with dimmable bulbs: to adjust the brightness you need a dimmer and two bulbs marked as dimmable.

Chevron glass and chrome

The chevron-cut glass refracts light along the edges of each cut, so the side band sparkles with a distinct pattern, while the etched disc underneath diffuses the downward light and does not glare at anyone looking up. Polished chrome and cut glass give a classic shape a glamorous edge, and the catalogue files Elle under modernist and glamour styles.

The light is for indoor use — in a bedroom or dining room, where it provides general light from the ceiling. The Elle family also offers the same fitting in black and in Heritage Brass.
