Griffin is a Quoizel ceiling light, distributed in Europe by Elstead Lighting: a wide bowl of etched opal glass held by a steel ring that hangs from three curved arms. The metal is finished in Weathered Brass, and the ceiling pan and the small ball finial closing the bowl underneath share the same finish.
Size and installation
The light is 42.2 cm across and 19.4 cm high, measured from the ceiling to the bottom finial. That is how much it takes out of the room height, so compare the figure with your own ceiling and with where people walk underneath. The bowl does not sit tight against the ceiling — a short stem and the arms show between the ceiling pan and the glass, which makes the fitting look lighter than a plain flat ceiling light.
It weighs 3.1 kg and is Class I, which means it must be connected to an earth conductor. The manufacturer specifies it for indoor use only.
What light it gives
Inside are three E27 lampholders, each rated for a bulb of up to 60 W. Bulbs are not included. Three LED bulbs of about 800 lm each give roughly the brightness of three old 60 W bulbs — the level of a main light rather than a mood light.
The opal glass is painted white on the inside, so the bulbs stay hidden and light leaves evenly across the whole bowl, without harsh hot spots. The fitting can be dimmed when used with bulbs marked as dimmable and a suitable dimmer.
Where it fits
The manufacturer describes Griffin as an understated, softly modern design. The simple curves of the arms and the matt white glass suit a bedroom or dining room, and the weathered brass sits well with warm wood. The same series includes chrome and Palladian Bronze versions, semi-flush variants and a pendant.
