Ellison is a single-light wall light by Hinkley, distributed in Europe by Elstead Lighting. A round black backplate carries a faceted die-cast cuff in Heritage Brass – a warm, lightly aged brass – framed above and below by black rings. Above it stands an upright clear glass cylinder with the bulb visible inside.
Size and where to mount it
The light is 34.6 cm tall and 12.7 cm wide and projects about 12 cm from the wall. As a slim, upright fitting it takes little room either side of a mirror or beside a door; compare its height with the edge of the mirror or cabinet it will hang next to. It weighs 1.21 kg.
Rated IP44, it is protected against splashing water from any direction, and the manufacturer names it for bathrooms. It is protection class I, so the wall box must provide an earth conductor. It is for indoor use only.
Which bulb
The light has one E27 lampholder for a bulb of up to 40 W, which is not included. Because the glass is clear, the bulb stays on show and its shape becomes part of the look – a long tubular bulb suits the slim cylinder, and the manufacturer recommends exactly that, as an E27 LED sold separately. The fitting is compatible with dimmable bulbs, so with a wall dimmer choose a bulb marked as dimmable.
Style and use
Black, faceted brass and smooth glass add up to a modern classic – a form with a traditional detail but no ornament. The light is intended for bathrooms and also for dining rooms. The Ellison family also includes a black version with brushed nickel in place of brass.
