Hollis is a wall light with two globe shades of opal glass hanging below a horizontal arm on an oval backplate. Each globe is held by a black metal band with a fitter at the top. The frame is steel in a black finish. The light comes from a Hinkley collection that draws on the Art Deco fittings of the 1920s, and is distributed in Europe by Elstead Lighting.
Size and installation
The wall light is 38.1 cm wide and 23 cm tall, and projects 19.3 cm from the wall. Compare the width with the space above a basin or chest of drawers, and the projection with whether people walk past that wall. It weighs 1.7 kg.
This is a Class I fitting, so it must be connected with an earth conductor.
For bathroom and dining room
The manufacturer specifies it for interiors and bathrooms. IP44 means protection against splashing water from any direction, which allows it to be fitted in a bathroom. Beyond the bathroom, it can also light a dining-room wall.
The form draws on Art Deco: geometric globes, bold bands and plain black without ornament contrast with the white, milky glass.
Bulbs and light
The wall light has two E14 lampholders, each for a bulb of up to 40 W. No bulbs are included. Opal glass is milky, so it hides the bulb and spreads its light evenly over the whole globe, with no harsh bright spot.
The fitting is compatible with dimmable bulbs: to dim it you need such bulbs and a dimmer.
