ASTRA DECO is a hand-blown glass sphere 12 cm across, set on top of a slender vertical frame in a gold electroplated finish. The whole fitting stands 30 cm tall, projects 20 cm from the wall and mounts on a round plate 8 cm in diameter.
A white sphere on a gold stroke
The shade is a complete sphere of white glass β opal rather than clear, so the bulb is invisible from every angle and the light leaves evenly through 360 degrees. That changes what the fitting does: ASTRA DECO does not light a chosen patch of wall, it glows as a small soft point, much like a bedside lamp or a classic globe on a post. White glass against the gloss of the gold frame is the contrast the whole collection rests on β a sphere broken by a plain vertical line.
It is why the sconce reads correctly in very different rooms: in retro and art dΓ©co schemes, where gold and glass are the native language, but equally in classical and even minimal interiors, where it works as a single accent.
The glass is blown by hand
Shades for the Astra collection are made at a Polish glassworks by hand blowing. There is a practical consequence worth knowing before you order: every shade is slightly different. Small variations in wall thickness and minute deviations of form are a property of hand-made glass, not a fault β and they are exactly what stops a lit sphere from looking like machine-moulded plastic.
E14, 9 W maximum β the bulb is not included
The fitting takes one E14 lamp and the manufacturer rates the socket at a maximum of 9 W. That is a low ceiling and it is not arbitrary: the lamp works inside a closed glass sphere, where heat has nowhere to go. In practice it means one thing β LED only. A 6β8 W E14 LED candle gives 600β800 lm today, as much as the old 60 W incandescent, and sits comfortably inside the limit. A 25β40 W incandescent or halogen does not belong in this fitting.
No light source is supplied, so the colour temperature is your choice. Warm white at 2700β3000 K suits gold and opal glass best; neutral and cool colours wash the tone out of the gold and turn the white shade bluish.
Where it works
The IP20 rating restricts the fitting to dry rooms β hallway, bedroom, living room, dining room. In a bathroom it may be installed only outside the protection zones, well away from bath and shower. At 30 cm tall with a 20 cm projection ASTRA DECO is a distinct but not dominant fitting: a pair either side of a bed or a mirror is the most common and the best use of it.
Build, maker, warranty
The frame is metal with an electroplated finish, the shade is glass. KASPA is a Warsaw manufacturer that designs and makes its lights in Poland and backs them with a 2-year warranty. ASTRA DECO comes in five finishes β gold, chrome, black, black with a gold mount and brushed titanium β and the same collection includes the shorter ASTRA sconce (16 x 12 x 12 cm) and the ASTRA 4 and ASTRA 6 ceiling lights.
