A „Y" branch connector for cables, sealed to IP68

This is neither a luminaire nor a light source — it is an installation connector, a black body with three cable glands arranged in a „Y". One cable goes in, two come out, so a single circuit feeds two fittings instead of one without chasing a wall for another junction box.

What IP68 means in this application

IP68 is the highest practical sealing level: dust-tight and resistant to prolonged immersion in water. For the installer that means the joint may sit underground, in garden soil, in the gravel strip around a building, or somewhere that floods regularly — where an ordinary terminal block or a surface-mounted box would not survive the season. The seal comes from three glands clamping onto the cable sheath; the point is to tighten them on a cable of the right diameter.

What it is for — and what it is not

The manufacturer defines the product unambiguously: a component for supplying luminaires, and for that purpose only. It joins stripped ends of copper conductors — not extension leads, not aluminium conductors, not installations other than lighting. The connector complies with the EN 60998 series (connecting devices for low-voltage circuits), rated ~450 V, 50/60 Hz, protection class I — i.e. in a circuit with a protective earth.

Installation

The manufacturer's instruction is short: insert the stripped conductor ends into the connector and press them so they reach all the way to the end of the socket, then tighten the glands. The connector must not be fitted or removed on live conductors — the circuit has to be isolated. All work must follow the applicable regulations; this is a part of the electrical installation, not an accessory to improvise with.
