Sawyer is a six-light chandelier for outdoor use, built around a wide ring that resembles a wagon wheel. The ring has a sequoia wood-effect finish, while the chains, hub and ceiling canopy are finished in rust iron. Six cylindrical shades of clear seeded glass stand on the ring. It is a design by the American brand Hinkley, distributed in Europe by Elstead Lighting.
Where it can hang
The fitting is rated IP44, meaning it is protected against splashing water from any direction. That suits it to a covered terrace, a veranda or a gazebo — anywhere with a ceiling or beam to hang it from, where rain does not fall directly on the fitting. Hinkley protects the frame with its own anti-corrosion coating.
How big it is and how it is installed
The ring is 61 cm in diameter and the fitting itself is 59.1 cm tall. It hangs on a 152.4 cm chain, and the overall drop is set during installation anywhere between 59.1 and 222.5 cm — over a patio table the lower edge usually sits 70–80 cm above the top. The round ceiling canopy is 13.3 cm across. The chandelier weighs 6.53 kg, so it needs a solid fixing point in the ceiling or beam.
What light it gives
The shades hold six E14 sockets, each for a bulb of up to 40 W. No bulbs are supplied, so you will need to buy six. The shades are clear, so the bulb stays visible — its shape and colour shape the look of the whole fitting. The chandelier is compatible with dimmable bulbs when a dimmer is installed in the circuit.
The frame is steel, and the fitting is protection class I, which means it must be connected to the earth conductor. The Sawyer family also includes a larger nine-light version.
