Scout is an outdoor wall light from Hinkley, distributed by Elstead Lighting: a square backplate in satin white, fixed with four visible silver screws, and a curved hood that directs light downwards through an etched lens. The fitting measures 16.5 cm high and wide and projects 12 cm from the wall.
Where it can be mounted
The manufacturer specifies Scout for exterior use. IP44 means protection against water splashing from any direction, so the light can go on the facade beside the front door or on a terrace wall. The body is a weather-resistant composite, and the manufacturer states protection against sea water — relevant for houses near the coast, where salty air quickly damages ordinary finishes.
The 12 cm projection is the figure to check against the space beside a door frame or a downpipe. Where there is no flat wall by the entrance, Elstead offers a separately sold corner bracket (C-BKT2-BROWN or C-BKT2-BLACK).
What light it gives
A GU10 LED lamp with a colour temperature of 3000 K and 560 lm is included — warm white, bright enough to light a doorstep, the steps in front of the door or a house number without dazzling people as they come in. The hood covers the lamp from the front and sides, so the light falls downwards onto the wall and the ground below.
The lamp can be replaced with any other GU10. For the supplied one the manufacturer gives a life of 25,000 hours. The fitting works with a dimmer provided the lamp used is marked as dimmable.
Construction and connection
This is a Class I fitting, so it must be connected to an earth conductor. It runs on 220–240 V mains. A plain square body with the contrasting screws as its only accent gives it a modern form; the Scout series also comes in black and painted heritage brass.
