Scout is a small outdoor wall light by Hinkley, distributed by Elstead Lighting. The black, slightly tapered shade is fixed to a square wall plate with four decorative screws in a contrasting brass colour. The light shines downwards through an etched, frosted lens beneath the shade.
Size and where it fits
The wall plate measures 16.5 × 16.5 cm and the light projects 12 cm from the wall. Compare that with the free strip of wall beside your door – between the frame and a downpipe or letterbox. It weighs 0.8 kg.
The manufacturer rates it for exterior use at IP44, meaning protection against splashing water from any direction – rain on the facade will not harm it. The housing is a weather-resistant composite. It is a Class I fitting, so it must be connected to an earth conductor. Where there is no flat wall by the entrance, an optional corner bracket is available: C-BKT2-BLACK in black or C-BKT2-BROWN.
Light
A GU10 LED lamp giving 560 lm is included – roughly what a traditional 50 W bulb produced. 3000 K is warm white. All the light goes down onto the step, stairs or path below rather than into the eyes of anyone arriving. The fitting takes GU10 LED lamps up to 10 W, so in years to come only the lamp needs replacing; the manufacturer quotes 25,000 hours.
The fitting is compatible with dimmable lamps – to dim it you need a dimmable GU10 lamp and a dimmer.
Versions
The Scout series also offers the same light in Painted Heritage Brass and Satin White. The plain square form with exposed screws suits a modern facade.
