IS 345 PF UP is a flush-mounted Steinel Professional Line motion detector made for ceilings in corridors, passageways and multi-storey car parks. The passive infrared sensor covers a full 360°, but its lens has an angle of aperture of only 45°, which gives a narrow, very long detection field — exactly what a circulation route needs.
Reach shaped for a corridor
The detector watches 12 x 6 m radially (72 m²) and 23 x 6 m tangentially, which is 138 m² along the axis of movement. The field is divided into 280 switching zones, and the area directly beneath the housing is monitored as well, so no one walks under the sensor unnoticed. A clip-on shroud is supplied for masking out individual lens segments and shortening the reach where detection is not wanted, for instance next to a door into an adjoining room.
The recommended mounting height is 2.5–5 m, with 2.8 m quoted by the manufacturer as optimum. The unit goes into a ceiling box with concealed wiring.
The PF version: a potential-free contact
PF stands for potential-free contact. Unlike an ordinary detector that simply feeds 230 V to a luminaire, the IS 345 PF closes a circuit that is fully isolated from its own supply. That makes it possible to control equipment on a different voltage or a different circuit: DALI and 1–10 V control gear, HVAC controller inputs, door and gate controls or building management systems. According to Steinel's wiring diagram the contact carries a maximum of 10 A at 240 V AC or 24 V DC, with a minimum of 100 mA at 12 V; it is not a SELV circuit.

Where it fits
Several detectors wired master/master cover a long circulation route: each responds to movement in its own zone and switches the whole group, so the light runs ahead of the person instead of coming on behind them. That is the standard arrangement in office buildings, hotels, the common parts of apartment blocks, warehouses and underground car parks. The potential-free contact also lets the detector be added to an existing control installation without rebuilding the lighting circuits.
