A chandelier in a bedroom has a harder brief than anywhere else in the house: it must look like a centrepiece and still be tolerable to someone lying flat, looking straight up at it.
Which way the lamps face
A chandelier with candle lamps pointing upward bounces light off the ceiling and gives soft, diffused illumination — the right choice for a bedroom. Shades pointing down with exposed lamps work beautifully over a dining table and badly over a bed.
Size and height
In a 14–18 m² bedroom a fitting of 50–70 cm across sits comfortably. Keep the bottom edge at least 210 cm above the floor. If the chandelier lands directly over the bed, go a size down — a fitting viewed from a metre away reads very differently from the same fitting in a photograph.
Dimming is not a luxury here
A bedroom needs two settings: full light for tidying, and almost nothing in the evening. Candle-lamp fittings on E14 are the easiest to control, since a dimmable lamp does the work without any special driver. Stay at 2700–3000 K.
Common questions
Is a chandelier suitable for a bedroom?
Yes, provided the lamps are shaded or face upward. A decorative fitting with bare bulbs above the bed becomes tiring quickly.
Should a chandelier hang over the bed?
Preferably not — the centre of the room is better. If it must, choose a shallow fitting with frosted glass shades.
How low can a chandelier hang in a bedroom?
No lower than 210 cm above the floor anywhere people walk.
