Roma 5 Black is a five-arm chandelier by Aldex from the ROMA collection: curved arms in a deep, glossy black, turned brass ornaments on every arm and on the stem, and five conical lampshades – black outside and gold inside.

Size and where to hang it

The chandelier spans 80 cm and is 87 cm tall overall. It hangs from a rigid rod ending in a round ceiling rose, so that height has to be subtracted from the height of the room – a figure to check above all in a bedroom and in rooms with a lower ceiling.

Compare the 80 cm span with the table it is meant to hang over: the shades spread wide, so the fitting looks its best above a large dining table or in the middle of a living room, where it has free space around it.

Bulbs and shades

Each of the five arms has an E14 lampholder, the thread of a small candle bulb, so five such bulbs are needed to complete it. The shades are 18 cm across and 12 cm high and open at the top and bottom, so light falls both downwards and onto the ceiling.

The gold lining reflects light from inside the shades, so even with neutral bulbs the glow beneath them has a warm, golden tint. The overall colour of the light is set by the bulbs you choose – for a classic interior 2700–3000 K is the usual pick.

Style

Aldex describes Roma as a classic-style chandelier with a touch of glamour: the traditional silhouette of a candelabrum with arched arms, paired with black set against gleaming brass. That colour pairing works with dark, traditional furniture as well as with light walls, against which the black frame stands out clearly.
