Bayview Medium Chain Lantern - 1 light - Black Elstead

The medium Bayview is an outdoor hanging lantern on a chain, with a four-sided cage of black cast aluminium and clear glass panes with bevelled edges. At the top a collar carries a round loop that the chain hooks into, and the base is finished with a moulded frame. It belongs to Elstead Lighting's own collection.

Size and hanging

The lantern itself is 33.6 cm tall and 18 cm wide. The overall drop given by the manufacturer ranges from 42.8 to 141.2 cm – a figure to compare with the height of the roof over your entrance, terrace or gazebo, and with the headroom you want to leave for people walking underneath. The fitting weighs 2.21 kg.

Bulb and light

Inside is one E27 lampholder for a bulb of up to 60 W. No bulb is included. The panes are clear, so the bulb is visible from every side and its shape and colour become part of the lantern's look. With a classic form like this, warm light of 2700–3000 K works well, and the bevelled edges of the glass refract it along the edges of each pane.

The fitting works with dimmable bulbs: brightness can be adjusted once you pair a dimmable bulb with a dimmer.

Where it can hang

The manufacturer intends the lantern for outdoor use. IP44 means protection against splashing water from any direction, so its place is under cover – beneath the roof of a terrace, balcony, porch or gazebo rather than out in open rain. It is a Class I fitting, so the connection box must provide an earth conductor.
