Bayview Porch Ceiling Lantern - 1 light source - Black Elstead

Bayview is an exterior ceiling-mounted lantern from Elstead Lighting's own range. A four-sided cast aluminium body in black frames four panes of clear glass with bevelled edges, and the whole lantern hangs just below a round ceiling plate. The maker describes the Bayview family as classic, in a Georgian spirit.

Size and where it goes

The lantern is 22.4 cm high and 14.2 cm wide, and weighs 1.03 kg. It is a compact fitting intended for a roofed entrance — a porch, a vestibule or an arcade — where it fixes directly to the ceiling, with no chain or drop. Compare the 22.4 cm height with the clearance under your porch roof so the lantern stays clear of the door opening.

An IP44 rating means protection against splashing water from any direction, so the fitting can be used outdoors. It is Class I and needs a protective earth connection.

Bulb and light

Inside is one E27 lampholder for a bulb of up to 60 W. No bulb is included. The panes are clear, so the bulb stays visible and its shape and colour decide how the lantern looks after dark. The maker suggests a separately sold clear Litec E27 A60 LED lamp rated 8 W, 800 lm and 3000 K — warm white, about as bright as an old 60 W bulb.

The fitting can be dimmed with a bulb marked as dimmable and a suitable dimmer.

Construction

Cast aluminium does not rust, which matters for a fitting that stays outdoors all year. The bevelled glass edges and moulded corner posts, visible in the close-ups, give the lantern its classic character.
