Bayview is a free-standing garden lantern about a metre tall, made of cast aluminium in a black finish. The four-sided head has clear glass panes with ground, bevelled edges, a shaped roof topped with a ball finial, and it sits on a slim column with a square base. Elstead Lighting describes its style as classical Georgian.
Height and where it stands
The lantern is 104.1 cm high and 18 cm wide, which puts the head at roughly hip height on an adult. It lights a path, a border or an entrance from close by without shining into people's eyes — a different job from a tall lamp post that lights the ground from above. It weighs 2.93 kg.
The manufacturer rates it for exterior use. IP44 means protection against water splashing from any direction and against solid objects larger than 1 mm. The lantern is protection class I, so a protective earth conductor must be connected on the 220–240 V supply.
Bulb and light
The fitting takes one E27 bulb of up to 60 W. No bulb is included. The bulb stays visible through the clear panes, which is why the manufacturer recommends, as a separately sold accessory, a classic clear A60-shaped E27 LED lamp, 8 W and 3000 K — 3000 K being warm white.
The lantern is compatible with dimmable lamps: with a dimmer in the circuit, use a bulb marked as dimmable. The bevelled edges of the panes refract the light and add small sparkles around the frame of the head.
The Bayview series
In the same series Elstead Lighting offers wall lanterns in several sizes, a chain lantern, a pedestal lantern and a tall lamp post, so an entrance, a facade and a path can be lit with fittings of one design.
