The Elstead Nico is a pendant light built from an open steel cage in the shape of an elongated diamond, hung on a chain beneath a round ceiling plate. The finish is burnished brass — a warm, matt gold with a patina that does not glint like polished metal. There is no shade: the lamp hangs fully exposed in the middle of the frame.

The exposed lamp is part of the design

This is the defining property of the fitting and the condition of using it well. Because nothing covers the light source, the look of the bulb determines the look of the whole fitting. An ordinary frosted LED globe spoils the effect; the form was drawn for decorative Edison-style lamps with a visible filament, ideally an ST64 or G95 shape at 2200–2700 K. The manufacturer states the fitting is compatible with dimmable lamps — with an exposed source, dimming is not decoration but the means of avoiding glare when the fitting hangs low over a table.

Dimensions and drop adjustment

The cage itself is 35.3 cm across and 60.3 cm high. The fitting hangs on 152.4 cm of chain, which puts the overall drop anywhere between 69.8 cm and 226.4 cm — a very wide range, covering both a low hang over a dining table and rooms with a high ceiling or a stairwell. Shortening means unhooking chain links, so no special tools are involved.

Construction and finish

Everything is steel. An open cage does not collect dust the way a shade does and will not yellow with age, but it also hides nothing: the care in the welds and the straightness of the sections are visible from every side. Net weight is 2.5 kg, so the fixing needs a sound point in the ceiling, though nothing beyond what a pendant of this size normally asks.

Installation

Nico is a hard-wired fitting for a 230 V supply (220–240 V, 50 Hz range) — there is no plug. It is protection class I, so the connection requires an earth conductor. There is one E27 socket rated to a maximum of 60 W; no bulb is supplied and there is no integrated LED. The product is for interior use only.

Brand and variants

Although sold under the Elstead Lighting name, the design comes from the American brand Generation Lighting (Feiss), which Elstead distributes in Europe. The same fitting is also made in polished chrome (FE-NICO-P-M-CH), with an entirely different, cooler character. A two-year guarantee applies.
