Galena is an outdoor hanging lantern on a chain, designed by Generation Lighting (Feiss brand) and distributed by Elstead Lighting. The stainless steel frame has a dark brown Sable finish, and the four sides are glazed with seeded glass holding fine air bubbles. The body tapers towards the bottom under a pitched cap, giving the traditional carriage-lantern outline.
How big it is and where to hang it
The lantern itself is 58.4 cm tall and 33.8 cm wide, and weighs 5.8 kg. It comes with 152.4 cm of chain, so the overall drop can be set anywhere from 66.2 to 222.1 cm. Compare that range with the height of the ceiling over your entrance, veranda or gazebo, and check how much headroom will remain below the bottom of the lantern.
The manufacturer rates the fitting for exterior use at IP44, meaning protection against water splashed from any direction and against solid objects larger than 1 mm. It is a Class I fitting, so the supply at the mounting point must include an earth conductor.
Which bulbs it takes
Inside are four E14 lampholders set in candle sleeves, each rated for a bulb of up to 40 W. Bulbs are not included. Elstead recommends clear-glass E14 LED candle bulbs for this lantern, such as a 4 W, 400 lm, 3000 K lamp; four of those give roughly 1600 lm of warm white light in total.
The lantern can be dimmed, but only with bulbs marked as dimmable and a suitable dimmer in the circuit. It runs directly on 230 V mains and has no driver of its own.
Where it works
The classic capped lantern shape with seeded glass suits a covered front entrance, a terrace, a balcony and a gazebo, as well as hotel and restaurant spaces with outdoor seating. The Galena family also includes wall lanterns, a half lantern and a post lantern in the same Sable finish, so a doorway and a driveway can be lit from one series.
