Galena is a two-light wall-mounted half lantern designed by Generation Lighting (Feiss brand) and distributed by Elstead Lighting. The stainless steel frame has a Sable finish: the roof is dark brown, while the frame bars have a greyish-brown, slightly textured tone. The panels are filled with glass containing fine air bubbles, and a decorative ring sits above the roof, as on a traditional carriage lantern.
Size and where to mount it
The lantern is 43.2 cm high and 24.1 cm wide, and projects 16.2 cm from the wall. It is half a lantern with a flat back that screws straight onto the wall, so beside a front door it is worth comparing those 24.1 cm with the free space between the door frame and a downpipe or the corner of the house. The fitting weighs 2 kg.
The manufacturer specifies Galena for exterior use and rates it IP44, meaning protection against water splashed from any direction. The fitting is Class I, so the wiring at the mounting point must include an earth conductor.
Which lamps it takes
Inside are two E14 lampholders in candle sleeves, each for a lamp of up to 40 W. Lamps are not included, so two need to be bought separately. The seeded glass is clear and does not diffuse light the way an opal shade does — the shape of the lamps stays visible from outside, which is why clear candle bulbs suit this lantern best.
Elstead recommends separately sold E14 LED candle lamps with clear glass at 3000 K, a warm white light. The fitting is compatible with dimmable lamps: to adjust brightness you need lamps marked as dimmable and a dimmer in the circuit.
Style and the Galena range
A plain rectangular frame, a pitched roof and a ring at the top give the classic lantern shape that the manufacturer describes as simple and elegant, with clean lines. It suits the facade of a house as well as the entrance of a hotel or restaurant. The Galena range also includes smaller and larger wall lanterns, a chain-hung lantern and a post lantern, so an entrance, terrace and driveway can be lit with fittings in the same finish.
