Dax is a small LED wall light by Hinkley, distributed by Elstead Lighting. A slim cylindrical head sits on a ball joint beside a round wall plate, and the whole fitting is steel in the Heritage Brass finish, a warm brushed brass. The switch is on the wall plate, so the light is turned on at the fitting itself rather than at a wall switch.
Size and mounting
The wall light is 17.1 cm high and 12.1 cm wide. Depending on how the joint is set, the head sits between 13 and 20 cm from the wall. Compare that figure with the space in front of the wall: a walkway, the back of an armchair or the edge of furniture standing next to it.
The fixings are hidden behind the wall plate, so no screws are visible once it is fitted. It is a Class I fitting, which means it must be connected to an earth conductor. It is designed for indoor use, runs directly on 230 V mains and weighs 0.6 kg.
What light it gives
The light source is a built-in LED module supplied with the fitting, so there is no bulb to buy, but the module cannot be swapped like an ordinary lamp. A flux of 320 lm is task light, enough for reading or for washing a section of wall, not for lighting a whole room. 3000 K is warm white, and a colour rendering index of CRI 90 means book covers, fabrics and walls show their true colours.
The head turns on its joint, so the beam can be aimed where it is needed. The fitting is dimmable; adjusting the brightness requires a dimmer suitable for LED fittings.
Where it works
An adjustable head and a switch on the fitting itself are what a reading light needs: you can turn it on from the bed or an armchair without getting up to the switch by the door. That makes Dax a fit for a bedroom, a reading corner or a dining room. The plain tube with no ornament and the brushed brass give it a modern character. The Dax range also includes a wall light in a black finish.
