NIGHTMATIQ is a STEINEL twilight switch in an anthracite housing 95 × 95 mm and 38 mm deep, surface-mounted on an exterior wall. It is not a luminaire and not a motion detector — it is a standalone switch that turns on the lighting wired to it when darkness falls and turns it off at dawn.

It does not react to movement — it reacts to light

That distinction decides whether the device suits a given job. STEINEL states plainly "With motion detector: No": NIGHTMATIQ measures ambient light level and switches the circuit on that basis alone. The light therefore stays on all night rather than for a few minutes after someone walks past. This is the answer for a house number, a lamp by the driveway, façade lighting and shop windows — anywhere the light should simply burn from dusk to dawn.

A 1–75 lux threshold, and what you can connect

The switching point is set by a potentiometer between 1 and 75 lx: set low, the sensor waits for full darkness; set high, it switches at dusk. The output handles 1000 W of resistive load, but for fluorescent lamps with electronic ballast the limit drops to 250 W — the figure most often overlooked when sizing a circuit. The sensor itself draws just 0.7 W. Several units can be interconnected by cable where one circuit serves several sides of a building.

Built for outdoors

The housing is UV-resistant plastic, so the anthracite finish will not grey out after two summers. IP54 protects against dust and splashing water from any direction, and the operating range of -20 to 40 °C covers a northern winter. The device is protection class I and needs an earth conductor. STEINEL covers it with a three-year manufacturer's warranty.
