Outdoor Chain-Hung Ceiling Light NORLYS Karlstad 230A/BS Black with Silver Patina E27

Karlstad 230A/BS is an outdoor pendant light that hangs on a chain from a ceiling hook. It has a flat, conical canopy shade 27.5 cm across with a clear polycarbonate diffuser beneath it, through which the bulb remains visible. Norlys designates this finish as black with a silver patina and describes the form as Scandinavian design.

Size and installation

From the ceiling to the lower edge of the diffuser the light measures 85 cm, and according to the manufacturer's drawing 67 cm of that is the chain section. Compare this drop with the clear height under your own roof, so that there is still room to walk underneath the diffuser. The fitting weighs 1.25 kg and hangs from a ceiling hook, which makes it suitable for a covered terrace, a gazebo or a sheltered entrance.

The terminals accept conductors up to 2 × 2.5 mm², and the cable gland takes a round cable 7 to 10.5 mm in diameter – worth checking against the existing wiring. The light is protection class II, meaning double insulation, so it does not need a protective earth conductor.

Which bulb to choose

The fitting has an E27 socket and takes an A55–A60 shaped LED bulb of up to 9 W. No bulb is included. The shape matters: a wide decorative globe or a long candle bulb will not fit under the diffuser. The manufacturer gives an 806 lm / 8.5 W / 2700 K LED lamp as an example – that is the brightness of an old 60 W bulb and a warm, slightly yellow light. The bulb is replaceable by the user.

Because the diffuser is clear, the light source stays in view and the light leaves the fitting without diffusion, so the look of the bulb becomes part of the look of the lamp.

Construction and durability

The body of the light is made of steel. IP55 means protection against dust and water jets, and IK09 indicates high impact resistance. The polycarbonate diffuser is UV-stabilised, which limits yellowing in the sun. If the diffuser is damaged, Norlys supplies it as service kit number 06240003, so the whole light does not have to be replaced.
