Pembroke is a semi-flush ceiling light from Elstead Lighting's own range, made in England. Below a small ceiling plate, a short stem of spirally twisted bars carries a wide opal glass bowl with a marbled pattern, finished underneath with a metal finial. The steel parts are black with rubbed gold highlights.
Size and mounting
The bowl is 40 cm in diameter and the whole fitting is 32 cm high from the ceiling. Compare the diameter with the width of the table or bed it will hang over, and the height with the clearance below the ceiling where it will be fitted. The ceiling plate is only 11 cm across and 2.5 cm high, so when replacing an old light it is worth checking that it will cover the marks left by the previous fitting.
The fitting weighs 3.6 kg. It is Class I, which means it must be connected to an earth conductor, and it is designed for indoor use on 230 V mains.
Lamps and light quality
The bowl holds three E14 sockets, each taking a lamp of up to 60 W. Lamps are not included, so you choose the colour and brightness yourself; three LED lamps equivalent to an old 60 W bulb give around 2400 lm together, enough for the main light in a room. The opal glass diffuses their light, so the lamps are not visible and do not glare when you look up. The fitting is compatible with dimmable lamps where a suitable dimmer is installed.
Where it works
The twisted stem, dark metal with gold glints and alabaster-coloured bowl give the light a classic character. It sits closer to the ceiling than a pendant while still holding the bowl away from it, which suits a bedroom, a dining room or a living room. The Pembroke range also includes an all-black version.
