Phix is a linear pendant chandelier spanning 130 cm, in which two arms reach out from a spherical champagne bronze hub and carry hourglass-shaped shades at their ends. Each shade is a pair of cones opening outwards – one throws light up, the other down. Hence four light points on only two arms.
Shades you set yourself
The most interesting property of this fitting is not visible in the catalogue photo: the shades pivot. They turn on their joints, and you decide how much light goes to the ceiling and how much to the tabletop. Set level, they give a symmetrical, sculptural effect and a soft wash across the ceiling; tilted down, the fitting becomes concentrated task lighting over the table. The same piece therefore serves a candlelit dinner and work at the kitchen island, with no change of lamps and no dimmer added.
Materials and finish
The structure is steel throughout. Arms, central sphere, drop rod and ceiling plate carry a champagne bronze finish – a warm, satin tone between gold and bronze, quieter than brass and warmer than chrome. The shades are matt black outside and white inside; it is the white interior that bounces the light and makes the cones glow evenly instead of casting a dark ring.
Installation and height adjustment
The fitting hangs from a rigid rod rather than a cable, so it holds level without adjustment. Four extension rods come in the box: two of 152 mm and two of 305 mm. Combined, they give a drop from 746 mm to 1356 mm, measured from the ceiling to the underside of the fitting. At a standard ceiling height that puts the shades roughly 75–80 cm above a tabletop – the range in which the light does not glare into the eyes of people seated. The fitting is protection class I, so the installation needs a protective earth conductor.
Lamps
Four E27 sockets take lamps of up to 40 W each. Lamps are not included, so it is worth planning their purchase alongside the fitting. The chandelier carries no dimming electronics of its own but works with dimmable lamps, which means brightness control depends on the lamp you choose and on the dimmer in the installation. Because the lower cones are open and visible from below, the look of the lamp matters – decorative retro models will be as much on show as the shades themselves.
Where it works best
A 1303 mm span and a depth of only 218 mm make Phix narrow and long – exactly the shape for a rectangular dining table or a kitchen island. Above a top of about 160 cm or more the proportions read naturally. The fitting is intended for dry interiors.
Who designed it
