Provence 1 Light Wall Light - Aged Brass & Matte Black Elstead

Provence is a wall light from Elstead Lighting's own range, modelled on French lights of the mid-twentieth century. A curved arm in an aged brass finish rises from a round wall plate and holds a conical shade of steel painted matte black. The brass-and-black contrast runs through the whole fitting, from the wall plate to the lampholder above the shade.

Dimensions and light direction

The wall light is 27.5 cm high, 21 cm wide and projects 34 cm from the wall. Compare that reach with where it will go: beside a bed or above a worktop, a shade held 34 cm out sits over the pillow or the edge of the counter, while in a narrow hallway check that it will not reach into the walkway.

An adjustable knuckle at the wall plate sets the angle of the arm and the direction of the light. The shade is opaque steel, so light falls downwards onto the surface below rather than sideways. The fitting weighs 1.17 kg.

Bulb and connection

There is one E27 socket for a bulb of up to 60 W. The bulb is not included, so you choose its colour temperature and brightness yourself; with the shade open at the bottom, the bulb will be visible from below. The light is compatible with dimmable bulbs — dimming needs such a bulb and a dimmer in the circuit.

It is Class I, which means it must be connected to an earth conductor. The manufacturer intends it for indoor use.

Where it fits

The manufacturer suggests Provence beside the bed, in the kitchen and in hallways; it also works in a dining room. The style is industrial and retro: a curved arm like old workshop and bistro lights, a plain conical shade and aged brass paired with black. The Provence series also comes in other finishes.
