Riggs is a horizontal wall light with three cylindrical shades of clear ribbed glass, set on a steel arm with a round wall plate in the centre. The whole fitting is finished in weathered brass. The design comes from the American brand Quoizel and is distributed in Europe by Elstead Lighting.
Size and where it goes
The fitting is 56 cm wide and 21.8 cm tall, and projects 17.9 cm from the wall. Compare the width with the mirror or basin it will hang above — three shades spread over 56 cm light a mirror evenly along that length. It weighs 2.48 kg.
The IP44 rating means protection against splashing water from any direction, which is why the manufacturer intends this model for the bathroom, above a mirror. It also works in other rooms, such as a dining room. The wall light is protection class I, so it must be connected to an earth conductor.
Bulbs and light
Each shade has an E27 lampholder for a bulb of up to 40 W, so three bulbs are needed in total. No bulbs are supplied. The distributor recommends the clear Litec E27 A60 LED bulb for this fitting, rated 8 W, 800 lm and 3000 K — three of them give 2400 lm of warm white light together, a level suited to main lighting rather than mood lighting only.
The glass is clear, so the bulbs stay visible, while the ribbing of the shades breaks their outline into vertical bands. The fitting can be dimmed when the bulbs are marked as dimmable and a suitable dimmer is used.
Style and construction
The steel frame, cylindrical shades with fitted caps and the visible wall plate give the wall light a lightly industrial character. Weathered brass has a matt, warm tone with uneven rubbed-back areas rather than the smooth shine of new metal.
