The STEINEL IS 2180 ECO is a wall-mounted infrared motion sensor for switching connected outdoor lighting, with an adjustable twilight threshold. The black RAL 9005 version has a rectangular backplate and a contrasting pale sensor lens. Article 034702 uses a UV-resistant plastic housing rather than a metal enclosure.
Choose the detection area around the route
Removing and turning the lens selects one of two basic reach settings: up to 5 or 12 m for movement across the detection field. For movement directly towards the sensor, STEINEL specifies shorter reaches of 1.5 or 3 m. Where people actually walk therefore matters as much as the distance between the sensor and the entrance.
The horizontal detection angle is 180°. Shrouds allow individual parts of the field to be excluded, such as a public pavement or neighbouring property. The optimum mounting height is 2 m. Walls and glazing must not obstruct the intended view, because the sensor does not detect heat through them. The manufacturer lists building fronts, entrances, terraces, balconies and driveways as applications. This is a lighting control, not a substitute for a burglar alarm.
Set the brightness threshold and switching time
The twilight threshold can be set from 2 to 2000 lx, while the light-on time is adjustable from 10 seconds to 15 minutes. Potentiometers sit beneath the front cover; the sensor has no remote control. These settings let you decide how dark the surroundings should be before movement triggers the connected light, and how long that light remains on.
Check the load type when choosing the lights. The 2000 W maximum applies to resistive loads, not every LED installation. STEINEL specifies separate total LED limits of 100, 175 and 350 W according to individual lamp wattage.
Wall space and separately purchased parts
The housing measures 12 cm high, 7.8 cm wide and 5.5 cm deep, with an IP54 rating. Its plain outline and lack of ornament suit modern or minimalist building fronts. The package contains one sensor. Mounting on an inside or outside corner requires the separately available corner bracket. Connection to the 230–240 V mains supply requires professional installation with the power disconnected. The instructions recommend at least 50 cm between the sensor and a light to avoid unwanted triggering from the light's heat.
