Taiko is a three-light pendant from Elstead Lighting's own range, made in England. The steel parts have an Olde Bronze finish, and the beige linen drum shade is 40 cm in diameter. Below its bottom edge hangs the signature detail of the series: a tangle of crossing square-section bars that resembles a nest.
Size and suspension
The body itself is 23.7 cm high and 40 cm across, and weighs 6.48 kg. The pendant hangs on rigid rods rather than a cable: two 30 cm rods and two 15 cm rods are supplied, giving an overall height from the ceiling of 36.4 to 126.4 cm. At the shortest setting the fitting sits just below the ceiling, much like a semi-flush light, which helps in a low room.
Over a dining table the bottom edge of the shade usually sits 70–80 cm above the tabletop, and a 40 cm shade keeps its proportions over a table 80–90 cm wide. Compare the drop range with your own ceiling height and choose the matching combination of rods. The fitting is Class I, so the installation must include an earth conductor, and it is intended for indoor use only.
Bulbs and light
Inside the shade are three E27 holders, each for a bulb of up to 60 W; bulbs are not included. Elstead recommends classic clear E27 A60 LED bulbs for this pendant: 8 W, 800 lm and 3000 K. Three of them give about 2400 lm in total for 24 W — warm white light sufficient for the table and its surroundings.
The linen shade diffuses light sideways, while most of the output leaves through the bottom, through the metal lattice hanging below the shade. The fitting works with dimmable bulbs: dimming requires a dimmer and three bulbs marked as dimmable.
Where it fits
Taiko is intended for use over a dining table. The combination of smooth, pale linen and the dark, irregular lattice of bars pairs a calm drum form with a sculptural detail that is seen mainly from the height of people seated at the table.
