Ziggy is a round flush ceiling light from Elstead Lighting's own range, fitted directly against the ceiling. The outer shade is a steel band cut in an open diamond pattern and finished in lacquered gold; inside it sits a white opal glass shade, closed at the bottom by a glass diffuser with a gold finial.
Size and mounting
The light is 40.6 cm in diameter and 22.9 cm high. Compare the diameter with the size of the room and the distance to the walls, and the height with the clearance below the ceiling where it will hang: it projects just under 23 cm down from the ceiling.
It weighs 5.5 kg, so it should be fixed into the ceiling structure or the supporting frame of a suspended ceiling rather than into the board alone. It is a Class I fitting, which means it must be connected to an earth conductor. It is designed for indoor use and runs on 230 V mains.
Lamps and light quality
The light has two E27 sockets, each taking a lamp of up to 60 W. Lamps are not included, so you choose the colour and brightness yourself; two LED lamps equivalent to an old 60 W bulb give around 1600 lm together, which is enough for the main light in a bedroom or a smaller living room.
The opal glass diffuses the light from the lamps, so they are not visible directly and do not glare when you look up. The fitting is compatible with dimmable lamps: with dimmable sources and a suitable dimmer the brightness can be adjusted.
Where it works
A flat shape tight to the ceiling suits places where a pendant would get in the way: a bedroom, a living room or a dining room. The geometric cut-out pattern in gold and the plain cylindrical body give the light a modern character. The same model is also available in a lacquered silver finish.
