Brompton is a round flush ceiling light with a steel body in a brushed brass finish and a shade of milky opal glass. The ceiling rim has a stepped, multi-tier profile – the Elstead Lighting design takes its cue from 1930s geometry. The fitting measures 35.6 cm across and only 10 cm high.
Size and where it can be fitted
At 10 cm high the light sits flat against the ceiling and takes no headroom, which matters under a low ceiling. Compare the 35.6 cm diameter with the size of the room and its distance from the walls; the whole fitting weighs 1.94 kg.
It is rated IP44, meaning it is protected against water splashed from any direction, and the manufacturer intends it for interiors including bathrooms. It is a Class I fitting: it must be connected to a protective earth conductor, which is worth checking before installing it on older wiring.
Light source and colour
The light has one GX53 socket – a flat, disc-shaped LED lamp that fits under the shallow shade. A 5.7 W LED lamp is included: it gives 600 lm of 3000 K light, a warm white, and the manufacturer compares this brightness to a traditional 55 W bulb. The opal glass diffuses the light, so the lamp itself is not visible.
The GX53 lamp can be replaced without replacing the fitting, and the manufacturer quotes a life of 25,000 hours. The fitting is compatible with dimmable lamps – dimming needs a GX53 lamp sold as dimmable and a suitable dimmer.
Which rooms it suits
The light is listed for bathrooms, bedrooms and dining rooms. IP44 settles the bathroom, while the warm 3000 K colour suits places where the light should be soft – the bedroom and above the dining table. The Brompton range also comes in polished brass and polished chrome.
