Guardian is a flush ceiling light by Quoizel, supplied by Elstead Lighting: an opal glass shade enclosed in a geometric steel cage, screwed flat to the ceiling. The cage is painted in a natural brass colour — steel in a brass tone, not solid brass. A small decorative finial sits at the centre of the shade's underside.
Size and where it goes
The fitting is 34.5 cm across and only 14.2 cm high, so it takes little room below the ceiling — an answer for low rooms and for spots where a pendant would get in the way of a walkway. It weighs 3.91 kg, so on a plasterboard ceiling it should be fixed into the structure behind.
IP44 means protection against splashing water from any direction, and the maker specifies Guardian for interiors and bathrooms. In the catalogue it is assigned to bathrooms, bedrooms and dining rooms. It is a Class I fitting — the connection box needs an earth conductor.
Lamps
Inside are two E27 lampholders for bulbs of up to 60 W each. Bulbs are not included. The opal glass hides them completely and spreads the light evenly, so the bulb's shape does not matter — brightness and colour do. An LED bulb of around 800 lm matches an old 60 W bulb, and bedrooms usually get 2700–3000 K.
The fitting works with dimmable lamps: dimming needs a dimmer and two E27 bulbs marked as dimmable.
Build
The cage is a pattern of elongated windows with clipped corners through which the milky shade shows — switched off, it sets the look of the fitting; switched on, a bright band of glass stands out behind it. The same Guardian flush light is also made in brushed nickel.
