Huntersfield 3 Light Large Chain Lantern - Black Elstead

Huntersfield is a large outdoor chain lantern by Hinkley, supplied by Elstead Lighting. It has a four-sided body that tapers towards the bottom, a pyramid-shaped roof and panes of clear seeded glass with air bubbles. The aluminium body is finished in black, and inside are three candle-style lamp holders.

Dimensions and hanging

The lantern itself is 45.4 cm tall and 27.9 cm wide, and weighs 4.28 kg. It hangs on a 152.4 cm chain, so the overall drop from the ceiling can be set from 55.9 to 210.5 cm — short under a low eave or low beneath a high porch roof or in a gazebo. The ceiling canopy is round. The fitting is Class I, so it must be connected to an earth conductor.

Lamps and light

The lantern takes three E14 lamps of up to 40 W each on 230 V mains; lamps are not included. The seeded glass is clear, so the lamps stay visible while the bubbles slightly break up the image of the source — the maker shows it with clear candle-shaped lamps. With 2700 K lamps the light at the entrance will be warm and slightly yellowish. The fitting is compatible with dimmable lamps: to adjust brightness you need dimmable lamps and a dimmer.

Outdoors and in the series

The IP44 rating means protection against splashing water from any direction, and the maker intends the lantern for exterior installation. It hangs under an eave, on a balcony, terrace or in a gazebo, and at the entrance to a hotel or restaurant. The roofed lantern form with glazing bars gives it a classic character. The Huntersfield series also includes wall lanterns in three sizes, a post-top lantern and a smaller single-lamp chain lantern.
