s.luce Cruet Pendant Light, Amber Glass, Flat Oval Shade 28 cm, 5 m Drop, E27

Cruet is an s.luce pendant light with a shade of mouth-blown glass in amber. This version has a flat, oval shade 28 cm across and 14 cm high, hung on a black cable with a black lampholder and a black ceiling canopy. The cable is 5 m long, so the light is made for tall spaces and open stairwells.

How big it is and where to hang it

At 28 cm across, the shade is noticeably smaller than a light meant for a large dining table, and at 14 cm high it reads as low and wide rather than elongated like the tall version of the same series. Over a longer table top or in a tall hallway, two or three of these hung side by side work better than one.

The hanging height is set during installation by shortening the cable. Five metres of drop let the shade come down from a ceiling above the upper floor to the level of the stairs or the hall, while in a room of ordinary height the surplus cable is cut to the length needed. Over a dining table, the lower edge of the shade usually sits 70–80 cm above the top. The ceiling canopy is 11 cm in diameter.

Bulb and light colour

The light has one E27 lampholder and takes a bulb of up to 40 W. No bulb is included, so you choose the brightness and colour yourself. The amber glass tints the light passing through it to a warm, golden tone, which makes this version a mood light rather than bright task lighting. The series also offers clear and smoked shades.

It can be dimmed, but that needs a dimmer and a bulb marked as dimmable, because the fitting itself has no control. The light is protection class I, so it is connected to wiring with a protective earth.

The maker places Cruet in the retro style: a glass shade with a soft, rounded form on a plain black suspension, with no further ornament. The version with five metres of cable is intended for galleries, stairwells and entrance halls, and with the cable shortened it also hangs over a dining table. Cruet shades come in two shapes and three glass colours, so several can be combined into a group.
