Hellux: wooden lamps turned in Poland
Hellux is a Polish workshop from Kluczbork, whose speciality is turning wood. The company has its own machine park for turning and CNC work, and it applies that skill to lighting: modern lamp designs that combine solid wood with metal. Pine, beech and oak are the usual woods, left with their natural grain under oil or finished in colour, and many lamps are made to order rather than pulled from a warehouse shelf.
Children's lamps with character
Children's lights are a line of their own at Hellux. Aeroplanes with propellers, cars, a locomotive, a lighthouse night lamp, a sun and flower shapes make the light a focal point of the child's room. The aeroplanes, for example, are made of solid pine and painted with water-based paints that, according to the maker, are certified safe for children and the environment. Colourways run from soft light blue and powder pink to bottle green and bright multicolour schemes, so the light can follow the colours of the nursery.
Next to the toy-like designs, Hellux also makes calm, grown-up wooden lamps: turned table lamp bases, floor lamps, oak pendants on a black cord and simple ceiling lights.
Hellux at Lunares
The Hellux range here includes pendant lights (including the aeroplane designs), table lamps and bedside lamps, floor lamps, flush ceiling lights and wall lights, for both children's rooms and the rest of the house.
What to check before buying
-
Light source. Many Hellux lamps use a replaceable E27 bulb, which lets you fit a warm LED bulb; others, such as the Fiore LED family, have a built-in LED module.
-
Size for the room. A large aeroplane pendant needs space around it; in a small room or under a low ceiling, the smaller version or a ceiling light works better.
-
Brightness in a child's room. A pendant gives general light, but add a bedside or night lamp for evenings, so the main light can stay off.
-
Wood is natural. Grain and tone vary from piece to piece, so two lamps of the same model will never look identical.
