LED garden lights

LED garden lights

Outdoor LED lights give the same brightness as old halogen and incandescent fittings for a fraction of the electricity, and they come on at full output on a frosty night with no warm-up. In a garden that changes three things: you can leave a path or porch light on for hours without worrying about the bill, you rarely climb a ladder to change a lamp, and you can pick the exact warmth of light that suits brick, timber and planting.

“LED” covers several quite different set-ups outdoors, though, and the difference matters more than the shape of the fitting.

Mains, low voltage or solar?

Mains-powered LED garden lights run at 230 V and are wired permanently into the house supply. They suit wall lights by the door, bollards along a drive and floodlights over a garage – anything that should work every night of the year. New outdoor wiring has to meet BS 7671, which in practice means armoured or suitably protected cable, weatherproof junction boxes and a circuit protected by a 30 mA RCD. It is a job for a registered electrician.

Low-voltage systems run at 12 or 24 V from a transformer that plugs into an outdoor socket. The cable is safe to handle, spike lights can be moved as borders grow, and most kits can be extended later. Size the transformer with 10–20% headroom over the total wattage, and keep cable runs reasonably short: voltage drops along the line and the last light in a long run will look dimmer.

Solar LED lights need no cable at all, but in a British winter a panel collects little charge, so treat them as decoration rather than security lighting.

Integrated LED or a replaceable LED bulb?

Many modern outdoor lights have the LEDs built in on a circuit board with their own driver. That allows slim wall lights, low-profile deck lights and very compact up-and-down fittings. The trade-off is repair: if the module or driver fails years later, you replace the module – or, if the maker has not designed one to be swapped, the whole fitting.

Fittings with a lamp holder (E27, GU10, GX53, G9) take an LED bulb instead. You can change colour temperature or brightness whenever you like and a fault costs one bulb. Choose bulbs rated for enclosed fittings: heat builds up behind sealed glass in summer, and heat shortens LED life far more than cold ever does.

Choosing the right light for each spot

Typical values for a domestic garden in the UK:

Where Light output per fitting Colour temperature IP rating
Porch or front door, under a canopy 400–800 lm 2700–3000 K IP44 or higher
Exposed wall, up-and-down light 2 × 150–400 lm 3000 K IP54–IP65
Path bollard, every 2–4 m 100–300 lm 2700–3000 K IP54–IP65
Spike spotlight on a shrub or tree 150–500 lm 2700–3000 K IP65
Driveway or side return 1000–2000 lm 3000–4000 K IP65
Deck or ground light you can walk on 50–200 lm 3000 K IP67, IK08–IK10 if driven over

A good LED fitting usually delivers 80–120 lumens per watt, so a 6–8 W wall light matches an old 60 W bulb. Rated life is commonly quoted at 25,000–50,000 hours, often as an L70 figure – the point at which the LED still gives 70% of its original output.

Light colour, wildlife and the neighbours

Warm white at 2700–3000 K flatters planting, stone and timber and feels right on a patio. Keep 4000 K for places where seeing clearly matters more than mood, such as a drive or bin store. Moths and other insects are drawn mostly to bluer light, so warm white – or amber around 2200 K near hedges and ponds – disturbs them less.

Glare is the other half of good outdoor lighting. Angle floodlights down, not across the garden, choose shielded fittings on boundary walls and avoid lighting a neighbour’s bedroom window. A light that shines where it is needed is also the one that looks best.

Care and common faults

  • Condensation inside the glass usually means a loose cable gland or a fitting mounted the wrong way up.
  • Flicker when dimmed means the bulb is not dimmable or the dimmer is not LED-compatible.
  • Black, sealed fittings in full south-facing sun run hot; a little shade helps them last.
  • Clean diffusers with water and mild washing-up liquid. Don’t use a pressure washer – even IP65 is rated for a hose jet, not high-pressure cleaning.
  • Each spring, check seals and cables, clear leaves from ground lights and re-aim spike lights after mowing.
  • Near the coast, choose 316 stainless steel or well powder-coated aluminium – salt air attacks cheaper finishes.

FAQ

What is the best LED light for outdoor use?

One whose IP rating, housing material and colour temperature suit its spot. Powder-coated aluminium or stainless steel, warm white light and a replaceable bulb or module are a sound starting point.

Are LED outdoor lights mains powered?

They can be either. Many are 230 V mains fittings for permanent wiring. Others run at 12 or 24 V from a transformer, and some are solar or battery powered.

Can I run an outside light from a socket?

Plug-in low-voltage kits are designed for exactly that: the transformer goes into a weatherproof outdoor socket. A fixed mains fitting should be wired in by an electrician rather than fed from a plug and extension lead.

Can neighbours complain about outside lights?

Yes. Artificial light can count as a statutory nuisance, and councils do investigate persistent glare into homes. Aiming lights downwards and choosing sensible brightness avoids almost every dispute.

What are the best LED lights for a patio?

Several warm white fittings of around 300–600 lm each – wall lights, low bollards or soft downlights in a pergola – rather than one bright floodlight.

Do outdoor LED lights work in freezing weather?

Yes. LEDs run more efficiently in the cold. What fails in winter are seals and glands that let water in, so careful installation matters more than the label.
