Aivian is a five-arm chandelier by Kichler, distributed by Elstead Lighting. The steel frame has a Weathered Brass finish – an aged brass – and each of the five arms, bent at a right angle, ends in a clear glass shade that flares slightly towards the bottom. The manufacturer calls the build industrial.
Size and hanging height
The chandelier is 76.2 cm in diameter and 35.5 cm tall. It is worth setting that diameter against the width and length of your own table or room – this is a fitting clearly larger than a single pendant, and it spreads light over a wide area below it.
It hangs on rigid rods rather than a chain: one 15.2 cm rod and three 30.5 cm rods are supplied, and the overall drop is set between 44.5 and 151.2 cm by choosing how many rods to use. Over a table, the lower edge of the shades usually sits 70–80 cm above the top. The round ceiling canopy is 13.3 cm across and the whole fitting weighs 4.35 kg. The manufacturer also allows it to be fitted as a semi-flush light, close to the ceiling, which helps in a room with a lower ceiling.
Bulbs and light
Each arm has an E27 lampholder for a bulb of up to 60 W, five bulbs in total. None are included. The shades are clear, so the bulbs are fully visible – decorative filament bulbs at 2700–3000 K bring out the character of the fitting and give a warm light. With five bulbs of about 800 lm each, equal to old 60 W bulbs, the chandelier can serve as the main light in a room.
The fitting is compatible with dimmable lamps – dimming needs a dimmer and bulbs marked as dimmable. It is a Class I fitting, so the protective earth must be connected. The manufacturer intends it for indoor use only.
Where it fits
Angular arms, cylindrical holders and exposed bulbs in glass shades are hallmarks of industrial style, softened here by the warm tone of aged brass. The chandelier is intended for over a dining table, for a hallway and for hotel interiors. The Aivian range also includes a smaller three-arm version in the same finish.
