Hue SQ 9 is a square surface-mounted ceiling light, 9 cm along each side and only 3.5 cm deep. The frame is white lacquered with rounded corners, and a flat opal diffuser sits inside it. The light source is an LED module built into the fitting.
How it mounts and how much room it needs
The fitting screws onto the surface of a ceiling or a wall, so nothing has to be cut out and no cavity is needed behind it. Rendl makes the same model as a recessed version too — this is the surface one, the version that goes onto concrete or a plastered wall.
The body projects 3.5 cm below the ceiling and its footprint is a 9 by 9 cm square. The whole fitting weighs 190 g, less than a glass of water, so the load on the fixing point is not a consideration here.
How much light it gives, and of what kind
The module draws 6 W and delivers 540 lm at 3000 K, a warm white with a slightly yellow cast, close to the light of a traditional bulb. For comparison, an old 60 W bulb gives about 800 lm, so a single fitting suits a hallway, a walk-in wardrobe or an alcove, while a longer corridor is lit with several in a row.
The diffuser is opal and covers almost the whole underside, so the fitting lights a downward-facing plane rather than a point.
Integrated LED, and what you do not buy separately
The light source is permanently built in: there is no thread and no lampholder, so no bulb is bought for it and the source cannot be replaced. The maker rates the module at 50 000 hours — after that the whole fitting is replaced rather than just the source.
The fitting runs on 230 V mains and the driver is enclosed inside it, so nothing is added on the supply side.
Finish and rooms
This one has a white lacquered frame. Rendl offers the same shape in chrome, black chrome, matte nickel and wood imitation as well, so one form can run through several rooms with only the finish changing.
The plain, unornamented square with rounded corners suits modern and minimalist interiors. In the catalogue the fitting is assigned to the living room, bedroom, kitchen and corridor, and to hotel and restaurant spaces — anywhere a luminaire is meant not to draw attention to itself.
