The Hinkley Kieran LED semi-flush light in lacquered brass is golden throughout: a brass canopy, a short vertically fluted column and a wide, flat ring closed underneath by a dish of etched white glass. The lacquer protects the brass surface from dulling. The steel fitting is distributed by Elstead Lighting.
How much space it takes
It is 36.2 cm across and 22.2 cm deep. Though the shade is held off the ceiling on a column, it stays high — with a 250 cm ceiling its underside is about 228 cm above the floor, so nobody will catch it with their head. The manufacturer intends Kieran for kitchens, corridors and walk-in wardrobes; it also suits hallways and bedrooms. The fitting weighs 3.02 kg; as a Class I fitting it needs the earth conductor connected.
Light
The integrated 32 W LED module is part of the fitting, so there are no bulbs to buy or replace. The colour can be switched in steps — from warm, through neutral 3500 and 4000 K, to cool 5000 K. The warm setting suits a bedroom in the evening, the cool one a wardrobe where clothing colours need telling apart. The white etched glass softens the light and shows no individual LEDs.
Style
The fluted column and warm sheen of brass quote the 1950s and 60s in a plain, modernist form. Kieran also comes in black with a brass column.
