Hallway Flush Ceiling Lights

A hallway is the room a flush ceiling light was invented for. It is narrow, it is usually the lowest ceiling in the house, everybody walks under the fixture with bags and coats, and there is nowhere to put a lamp. A fitting that hugs the plaster removes the one real problem — headroom — and then the interesting questions are about spacing, switching and glare.

Head clearance is the first measurement

The floor-to-fitting distance you actually want is 2.1 m minimum in a circulation space, and more where a door opens or stairs run underneath. On a 2.3 m hall ceiling that leaves 200 mm of budget, which a flush drum at 60-100 mm deep fits comfortably and a pendant does not. On a landing, measure from the highest step within the fixture's footprint, not from the floor below.

Spacing along a long hall

One central fitting lights a circle and leaves the two ends dim, which is why a long hall reads as a tunnel. Space fittings at roughly 1.5 times the ceiling height — about 3.5 m apart under a 2.4 m ceiling — and set the end ones about half that from the walls. Three modest 20-25 cm fittings along a 9 m hall beat one 50 cm fitting in the middle, and they use less power doing it.

Switching: two-way, sensors and a low night level

A hall wants light from both ends, so two-way switching is worth the extra cable if the walls are open. A PIR sensor works well at a front door and badly on a landing, where it triggers every time somebody turns over upstairs — if you use one, look for a model with an adjustable hold time and a lux threshold so it stays off in daylight. Some integrated-LED fittings hold a dim night level continuously; in a hall with no window that is more useful than full output.

Glare in a narrow corridor

You look straight at a hall fitting from three metres away, which is the worst possible viewing angle. An opal diffuser hides the source entirely and is the safe default. Clear or ribbed glass in a narrow hall puts a bright point directly in your eye line and prints stripes down the walls. Aim for 100-150 lm per square metre — a hall does not need to be bright, it needs to be even.
