The medium Saylor is an LED wall light by Hinkley, distributed by Elstead Lighting: a tube of etched opal glass inside an open cage of long rods and cross bars, closed at each end by bold end caps. The steel parts are finished in matte black, and a round backplate holds the tube at its midpoint.
Size and two ways to mount it
The fitting is 61 cm long, the tube with its end caps is 11.4 cm across, it projects 13 cm from the wall and weighs 1.83 kg. The maker allows horizontal or vertical mounting. Horizontally, compare the 61 cm with the width of the mirror or basin it will sit above; vertically it can go either side of a mirror.
It is a Class I fitting and must be connected to an earth conductor.
For bathrooms: IP44
IP44 means protection against splashing water from any direction, which is why the maker rates Saylor for bathroom use – above and beside the mirror. It also suits a hallway or dining room.
How much light, and what kind
The 23.5 W integrated LED gives 1220 lm – clearly more than an old 60 W bulb (about 800 lm) – so it can be the main light at a mirror. 3000 K is a warm white. The light source is built in: it cannot be replaced and there is nothing to buy separately. The maker lists the fitting as dimmable; you need a suitable dimmer switch to dim it.
Style
Matte black steel against white opal glass makes a strong contrast. The maker calls the look nautical – the barred cage and end caps recall ship lights – and transitional, sitting between classic and modern. The same range also comes in a Heritage Brass finish.
