Crystal lights

A crystal lamp does something an ordinary shade can't: it splits light into hundreds of tiny reflections that bring ceilings and walls to life. This collection holds more than 900 crystal lights, from traditional chandeliers to sleek flush fittings and wall lights, most often in gold or chrome finishes and taking E14 or G9 bulbs.

Choosing the right size and drop

  • Diameter – add the room's length and width in metres and multiply by 10 for a rough diameter in cm (a 4 × 5 m room → about 90 cm). In feet, length + width gives the diameter in inches.
  • Head clearance – keep at least 2.1 m (about 7 ft) between the floor and the bottom of the fitting where people walk.
  • Over a dining table – 75–90 cm (30–36 in) above the tabletop, with a diameter of roughly half to two-thirds of the table's width.
  • Low ceilings – under 2.5 m, a flush or semi-flush crystal fitting works better than a hanging chandelier.
  • Weight – large tiered chandeliers can be heavy, so have the ceiling fixing checked.

To get real sparkle, use clear bulbs – E14 candles or G9 capsules. Frosted bulbs diffuse the light and dull the crystal. Warm white at 2700–3000 K flatters gold and brass.

Who makes them

Most designs come from Fabbian, Luces Exclusivas, Elstead Lighting, Ideal Lux, Azzardo and Milagro – spanning modern Italian design and classic English styles.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between crystal and glass?

Crystal glass contains metal oxides that raise its refractive index, so it throws off more rainbow-coloured sparkle than standard glass.

How do I clean a crystal chandelier?

With the power off, wipe the drops using cotton gloves dampened with water and a little washing-up liquid or surgical spirit. On large chandeliers, remove drops section by section.

Does crystal work in a modern home?

Yes – pick a clean shape such as a ring or cascade in chrome or black, and crystal becomes an accent rather than a ballroom statement.
