Hollis is a semi-flush ceiling light by Hinkley, distributed by Elstead Lighting: a short stem drops from a round ceiling plate and five flat steel arms radiate from it. Each arm ends in a globe of etched opal glass held by a black steel band. The whole fitting is finished in black, so the milky globes stand out clearly against the frame.
Size and where to fit it
The light is 81.3 cm across and only 30.5 cm high. With a 250 cm ceiling, the lowest point of the globes sits about 220 cm above the floor, which is why Hinkley intends this semi-flush for rooms with lower ceilings, where a pendant would take too much headroom. A diameter of more than 80 cm needs a room of matching size — compare it with the width of the table or bed it will sit above.
The fitting weighs 4.2 kg and is Class I, so it is connected with an earth conductor.
Light sources
Each of the five globes has an E14 lampholder, and the manufacturer allows up to 40 W per lamp. Lamps are not included — you will need five E14 bulbs. The opal glass diffuses the light and hides the bulb itself, so the five globes give soft, even light without glare. The fitting works with a dimmer switch when E14 lamps marked as dimmable are used.
Where it works
IP44 means protection against splashing water from any direction, so Hollis can light a bathroom, and is just as suitable for a bedroom, dining room or living room. The globe shades in metal bands recall mid-twentieth-century lights, which gives the fitting its vintage character. The Hollis range also comes in a Heritage Brass finish and in versions with clear seeded glass.
