Niva is a Kichler fitting, distributed by Elstead Lighting, that can be installed three ways: as a wall light, a semi-flush ceiling light or a pendant. A black steel dome shade 20.3 cm across covers a globe of satin-etched opal glass, which drops just below its rim.
Three ways to mount it
The light arrives set up as a wall light, together with the hardware to convert it to a semi-flush. As a wall light it is 22.7 cm high and projects 24.1 cm from the wall — worth comparing with the width of the hallway or passage it will hang in. On the ceiling it fixes to a round ceiling pan 13.4 cm across and 2.5 cm deep, which covers the junction box.
As a pendant it hangs on rigid stems, with a drop of 29.6 to 105.8 cm. The height is set during installation by choosing the stem length, so it needs planning before the electrician starts. The fitting weighs 1.47 kg.
Light source
There is one E27 socket for a bulb of up to 40 W; the bulb is not included. The limit refers to actual wattage, so an ordinary E27 LED bulb of about 800 lm, the equivalent of an old 60 W bulb, stays well within it. The opal glass diffuses the light, while the opaque steel dome sends it downwards, below the fitting.
The fitting is compatible with dimmable bulbs — to dim it you need a dimmer and a bulb sold as dimmable. It is Class I, so it must be connected to the protective earth conductor, and it is for indoor use only.
Where it works
The manufacturer recommends Niva for kitchens, entrance halls, hallways and walk-in wardrobes and places it in the contemporary style: a plain black dome, an opal globe and unadorned mounting hardware. Because one model works in three configurations, you can combine a wall light and a pendant with an identical shade in the same room.
