Skye in size S is a pendant lamp with a 20 cm clear glass globe that has an angled opening cut into its side. A slim ring runs across the globe, and the lamp holder, ring and ceiling canopy are finished in classic brass. The lamp was designed by Hinkley and is sold in Europe by Quintiesse, part of the Elstead Lighting group.
Size and hanging height
The globe with its holder is 25 cm high and 20 cm across. The overall drop from the ceiling is set during installation anywhere from 30 to 207 cm — the cable is shortened on site. With a 250 cm ceiling and a 75 cm dining table, the bottom of the globe sits 70–80 cm above the tabletop at a drop of roughly 95–105 cm, comfortably within that range.
The lamp weighs 1.3 kg. The manufacturer intends it for the living room, dining room and bedroom.
Bulb and connection
It takes one E27 bulb of up to 60 W. The bulb is not included. The glass is clear, so the bulb stays visible and defines how the lamp looks — which makes a decorative bulb, for example one with a visible filament at 2200–2700 K, worth choosing. The lamp can be dimmed if the bulb is marked dimmable and there is a dimmer in the circuit.
The fitting is hard-wired to the ceiling cables. It is Class I, so it needs an earth conductor in the ceiling box.
Style
The asymmetric cut-out of the globe and the brass ring crossing it draw on retro style, specifically mid-century modern design. Through the clear glass you see the line of the ring and the shape of the bulb. The Skye series also includes larger pendants, among them a six-light version.
