Whitecap is a Quoizel semi-flush ceiling light, distributed by Elstead Lighting, with a shade of tinted amber glass and a wavy, scalloped outline. The shade is made of two rings of ribbed glass petals – a wider one at the top and a smaller bowl beneath it – while the metal parts, namely the short stem, the ceiling plate and the finial at the bottom, have a mottled cocoa brown finish.
Size and mounting
The fitting is 39.5 cm across and 25.5 cm tall. It hangs on a short stem just below the ceiling, so it takes up far less height than a pendant – compare this figure with the room height, especially in a hallway or corridor where people walk underneath. The round ceiling plate is 13.3 cm in diameter and 2.5 cm deep.
The light weighs 5.9 kg, noticeably more than a typical ceiling light, so on a plasterboard ceiling it needs to be fixed to the supporting structure rather than to the board alone. It is a Class I fitting, so the ceiling box must provide an earth conductor.
Bulbs and light
Inside are four E14 lampholders, each for a bulb of up to 40 W; no bulbs are included. The amber glass tints the light passing through it a warm, honey colour, and the ribbing of the petals refracts it into reflections – which is why warm bulbs of 2700–3000 K suit this fitting. It is not designed for dimming, so it should not be connected to a dimmer.
Where it works
The manufacturer suggests Whitecap for a hallway, entrance foyer, home office, bathroom and kitchen. It is intended for indoor use. The form is classic: a petalled glass shade set against dark metal details. The Whitecap collection also includes a smaller version of this semi-flush light.
