Piper is a five-tier chandelier by Kichler in polished chrome, built from rings hung with vertical rods of clear glass and chrome-finished metal. Each tier ends in a ring of glass balls that sparkle along the lower edge of every layer when the lamps are on. It is distributed in Europe by Elstead Lighting.
Size and ceiling height
The body itself is 177.2 cm tall and 56.5 cm in diameter, and the overall drop adjusts from 188.1 to 375.6 cm on 182.9 cm of chain. Even at the shortest drop, the bottom of the chandelier hangs 188 cm below the ceiling – in a room 2.6 m high it would end only 72 cm above the floor. This is a fitting for tall spaces: a stairwell, a galleried hall, a hotel lobby or a dining area open to the roof, where there is still room above the table for its 75 cm height plus a 70–80 cm gap.
The chandelier weighs 30 kg. That weight calls for a fixing into a load-bearing ceiling rather than plasterboard. The round ceiling pan is 12.7 cm in diameter, and protection class I means connection with a protective earth conductor – installation is a job for an electrician.
How much light, and what kind
The chandelier has 18 E14 lampholders, each for a bulb of up to 60 W. No bulbs are included, so eighteen need to be bought. The rods and balls are clear glass, so the bulbs show between them – the manufacturer suggests separately sold LED candle lamps with a clear glass envelope. The fitting works with dimmable lamps, which with this many light points lets the brightness come down in the evening; every bulb then has to be marked as dimmable.
Style and use
Vertical glass rods and chrome hoops give a modern shape, and the glass balls lighten it – the manufacturer itself describes it as mixing modern lines with a delicate, feminine touch. It is for interior use only. It suits a dining room above the table, a hallway, a stairwell or a hotel – anywhere a high ceiling lets all five tiers be seen.
